     사람은 깨진 그릇을 버립니다. 그러나 하나님은 깨진 그릇을 가까이 하십니다. 하나님은 완벽한 사람을 쓰시는 것이 아니라 깨어진 사람을 쓰십니다. 깨어짐은 부서짐을 의미합니다. 부서짐 속에는 신비로운 하나님의 원리가 담겨 있습니다. 흙이 부서져 곡식을 냅니다. 곡식이 부서져 빵이 됩니다. 빵이 부서져 우리 몸의 에너지가 됩니다. 포도는 으깨져야 포도주가 됩니다. 장미도 으깨질 때 향수가 됩니다. 사람도 마찬가지입니다. 원숙한 인격은 하루아침에 만들어지지 않습니다. 사람은 낮아지고, 깨어지고, 부서지는 과정을 통과할 때 비로소 성숙해집니다.

생명의 세계는 우리에게 한 가지 영적 진리를 가르쳐 줍니다. 풍성한 생명은 언제나 부서짐을 통해 나타난다는 사실입니다. 어머니가 자녀를 잉태하고 열 달이 지나면 출산의 순간을 맞이합니다. 자궁이 열리고 양수와 피가 흐르며 새로운 생명이 세상에 태어납니다. 고귀한 생명은 쉽게 태어나지 않습니다. 아름다운 삶도 쉽게 만들어지지 않습니다.

하나님은 깨어지고 상한 마음을 소중히 여기십니다. “하나님께서 구하시는 제사는 상한 심령이라 하나님이여 상하고 통회하는 마음을 주께서 멸시하지 아니하시리이다”(시 51:17). 예수님은 한 알의 밀의 비유를 통해 깨어짐의 신비를 가르쳐 주셨습니다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라”(요 12:24). 깨어짐의 역설입니다. 밀알의 껍질이 땅속에서 깨어질 때, 씨앗 속에 담긴 생명이 흘러나옵니다. 그리고 그 생명은 싹을 틔우고 결국 많은 열매를 맺습니다. 깨어짐이 없다면 열매도 없습니다.

하나님은 우리를 존귀하게 사용하시기 전에 먼저 연약하게 하십니다. 하나님은 깨어짐을 통과한 사람을 사용하십니다. 강한 사람은 자신의 힘으로 일합니다. 그러나 깨어진 사람은 하나님을 의지합니다. 성령님의 능력으로 일합니다. 사도 바울도 자신의 약함 속에서 하나님의 능력을 경험했습니다. “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라 .... 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력이 내게 머물게 하려 함이라”(고후 12:9). 하나님의 능력은 우리의 강함에서 드러나는 것이 아니라 약함 속에서 온전해집니다. 약함을 지키는 것이 진정한 능력입니다. 영성 훈련은 약함을 가꾸는 훈련입니다.

하나님은 우리를 존귀하게 사용하시기 전에 먼저 깨뜨리십니다. A. W. 토저는 “하나님은 우리를 크게 사용하기 전에 먼저 깊이 상하게 하신다.”라고 말했습니다. 찰스 스펄전은 “주님은 고난의 산지에서 가장 훌륭한 군사를 얻으신다.”라고 말했습니다. 하나님이 쓰신 인물들은 한결같이 고난을 통과했습니다. 고난을 통해 깨어졌습니다. 고난을 통해 겸손해졌습니다. 고난을 통해 온유해졌습니다. 고난을 통해 유연해졌습니다. 그리고 마침내 고난을 통해 순종의 사람이 되었습니다.

하나님의 깨뜨리심은 결코 망가뜨림이 아닙니다. 하나님의 손길은 정확합니다. 어느 정도, 어느 시점에서 깨뜨려야 하는지를 아십니다. 우리는 깨어짐을 싫어합니다. 하지만 깨어짐이 없이는 깨달음도 없습니다. 깨어질 때 성령님이 함께 역사하셔서 깨닫게 하십니다. 성령님은 무지를 밝혀 주시는 빛입니다. 십자가의 성 요한은 말했습니다. “상처 난 틈으로 빛이 들어온다.” 깨어진 틈으로 하나님의 빛이 들어옵니다. 팀 켈러도 이렇게 말했습니다. “복음은 금 간 그릇을 통해 가장 밝게 빛난다.” 우리의 깨어짐은 하나님의 능력을 막는 장애물이 아닙니다. 하나님의 능력이 임하는 문입니다.

하나님은 십자가에서 예수님을 깨뜨리셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 자신의 몸을 내어 주셨습니다. 반석이 깨어질 때 생수가 흘러나온 것처럼, 십자가에서 찢기신 예수님의 몸에서 생명수가 흘러나왔습니다. 사랑은 때로 자신을 깨뜨리는 것입니다. 옥합을 깨뜨린 여인은 예수님을 사랑했기 때문에 값진 향유를 깨뜨려 주님의 머리에 부어 드렸습니다. 옥합이 깨질 때 향기가 퍼졌습니다. 이 여인은 옥합을 깨뜨린 것이 아니라 자신을 깨뜨린 것입니다.

하나님이 찾으시는 사람은 완벽한 사람이 아닙니다. 오스왈드 챔버스는 말했습니다. “하나님이 불가능한 일을 하실 때는 불가능해 보이는 사람을 사용하신다.” 하나님은 깨어진 사람을 사용하십니다. 고난을 통해, 가난을 통해, 실패를 통해, 질병을 통해, 갈등을 통해 깨어진 사람을 사용하십니다. 그러므로 깨어짐을 두려워하지 마십시오. 깨어짐 속에서 은혜가 자랍니다. 깨어짐 속에서 성숙이 시작됩니다. 하나님은 완벽한 사람을 사용하지 않으십니다. 하나님은 깨어진 사람을 통해 완전한 일을 이루십니다. 깨어짐을 통해 더욱 존귀하게 쓰임 받는 은혜가 여러분의 삶에 함께하시길 빕니다.

God Uses Broken People

   People throw away broken vessels. But God draws near to broken vessels. God does not use perfect people; He uses broken people. Brokenness means being shattered. Yet within brokenness lies a mysterious principle of God. Soil must be broken to produce grain. Grain must be crushed to become bread. Bread must be broken to become energy for our bodies. Grapes must be pressed to become wine. Even roses release fragrance when they are crushed into perfume. The same is true for people. A mature character is not formed overnight. Only when a person passes through the process of being humbled, broken, and shattered does true maturity emerge.

The world of life teaches us one spiritual truth: abundant life always appears through brokenness. When a mother conceives a child and ten months pass, the moment of birth arrives. The womb opens, and through amniotic fluid and blood a new life enters the world. Precious life is not born easily, nor is a beautiful life formed without a cost.

God treasures a broken and contrite heart. “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). Jesus also taught the mystery of brokenness through the parable of a grain of wheat: “I tell you the truth, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:24). This is the paradox of brokenness. When the shell of the grain breaks open in the soil, the life hidden within the seed flows out. That life sprouts and eventually bears much fruit. Without brokenness, there is no fruit.

Before God uses us honorably, He first allows us to become weak. God uses those who have passed through brokenness. Strong people work by their own strength. But broken people rely on God. They work through the power of the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul also experienced God’s power in his weakness: “‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9). God’s power is not revealed through our strength but is made perfect in our weakness. Maintaining our weakness is true strength. Spiritual training is the discipline of cultivating weakness.

Before God uses us honorably, He first breaks us. A. W. Tozer once said, “It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply.” Charles Spurgeon said, “The Lord gets His best soldiers out of the highlands of affliction.” Those whom God has used have consistently passed through suffering. Through suffering they were broken. Through suffering they became humble. Through suffering they became gentle. Through suffering they became flexible. And finally, through suffering they became people of obedience.

God’s breaking is never destruction. His touch is precise. He knows how much to break us and when to do it. We dislike brokenness. Yet without brokenness there is no awakening. When we are broken, the Holy Spirit works with us and brings understanding. The Holy Spirit is the light that illuminates our ignorance. John of the Cross said, “The light enters through the wounded place.” God’s light enters through the cracks of our brokenness. Tim Keller also said, “The gospel shines most brightly through cracked vessels.” Our brokenness is not an obstacle that blocks God’s power. It is the doorway through which His power comes.

God allowed Jesus to be broken on the cross. Jesus gave His body on the cross. Just as living water flowed when the rock was struck, the water of life flowed from the body of Jesus that was torn on the cross. Love sometimes means breaking oneself. The woman who broke the alabaster jar loved Jesus, and so she broke the costly perfume and poured it on the Lord’s head. When the jar was broken, the fragrance spread. In truth, this woman did not merely break the jar—she broke herself.

The person God seeks is not a perfect one. Oswald Chambers said, “When God wants to do the impossible, He uses someone who seems impossible.” God uses broken people—those broken through suffering, poverty, failure, illness, and conflict. Therefore, do not fear brokenness. Grace grows in brokenness. Maturity begins in brokenness. God does not use perfect people. Through broken people, God accomplishes His perfect work. May the grace of being used more honorably through brokenness be with you.
