[목회서신] 하나님이 개입하시는 때를 아는 지혜 | Learning the Mystery of Waiting with Blue

     새해를 위한 설교를 준비하던 중 한 가지 질문이 떠올랐습니다. “하나님은 언제 우리 삶 속에 개입하시는 것일까?” 물론 하나님은 원하시는 때에 언제든지 우리 삶에 개입하실 수 있습니다. 그러나 성경을 묵상하다 보면, 하나님께서 특별히 우리의 삶 속에 개입하시는 때가 있음을 발견하게 됩니다.

첫째, 기도할 때 하나님이 개입하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 기도할 때 천사를 보내어 응답하십니다. 그 비밀을 우리는 다니엘의 기도를 통해 발견할 수 있습니다. “곧 내가 기도할 때에 이전에 환상 중에 본 그 사람 가브리엘이 빨리 날아서 저녁 제사를 드릴 때 즈음에 내게 이르더니 내게 가르치며 내게 말하여 이르되 다니엘아 내가 이제 네게 지혜와 총명을 주려고 왔느니라 곧 네가 기도를 시작할 즈음에 명령이 내렸으므로 이제 네게 알리러 왔느니라”(단 9:21-23상). 하나님은 다니엘이 기도를 시작할 때 가브리엘 천사를 보내셔서 그의 기도에 응답하셨습니다.

예수님께서도 기도하실 때 하늘이 열렸고, 성령님께서 강림하셨으며, 하나님의 음성이 임했습니다. “예수도 세례를 받으시고 기도하실 때에 하늘이 열리며 성령이 비둘기 같은 형체로 그의 위에 강림하시더니 하늘로부터 소리가 나기를 너는 내 사랑하는 아들이라 내가 너를 기뻐하노라 하시니라”(눅 3:21하-22). 또한 예수님께서 겟세마네 동산에서 간절히 기도하실 때에도 하나님은 천사를 보내어 힘을 더해 주셨습니다. “천사가 하늘로부터 예수께 나타나 힘을 더하더라”(눅 22:43). 우리가 기도할 때 하늘이 열립니다. 하나님이 그의 천사들을 보내셔서 놀라운 일을 이루십니다.

둘째, 찬양할 때 하나님이 개입하십니다. 찬양은 놀라운 능력입니다. 찬양할 때 우리는 하나님의 임재를 경험하게 됩니다. “이스라엘의 찬송 중에 계시는 주여 주는 거룩하시니이다”(시 22:3), 다윗은 찬양의 능력을 깊이 알았던 사람입니다. 그가 수금을 탈 때 사울 왕의 마음이 상쾌해지고, 악령이 그에게서 떠나갔습니다. “다윗이 수금을 들고 와서 손으로 탄즉 사울이 상쾌하여 낫고 악령이 그에게서 떠나더라”(삼상 16:23하).

여호사밧 왕 또한 찬송의 능력을 알았습니다. 큰 군대가 그를 치러 왔을 때 그는 하나님만 바라보며 기도했습니다(대하 20:12). 하나님께서 전쟁의 승리를 약속하신 후, 여호사밧이 한 일은 전쟁터 맨 앞에 노래하는 자들을 세워 하나님을 찬송하게 한 것이었습니다. 찬양을 시작할 때 하나님이 개입하셔서 적군을 물리쳐 주셨습니다. “그 노래와 찬송이 시작될 때에 여호와께서 복병을 두어 유다를 치러 온 암몬 자손과 모압과 세일 산 주민들을 치게 하시므로 그들이 패하였으니”(대하 20:21하-22). 찬양은 전쟁에서 승리하게 하는 능력입니다. 어려운 일을 만날 때, 찬송을 부르십시오. 하나님께서 개입하십니다.

바울과 실라도 빌립보 감옥에서 한밤중에 기도하며 하나님을 찬송했습니다. 그때 큰 지진이 일어나 옥문이 열리고 모든 결박이 풀렸습니다(행 16:25–26). 더 놀라운 것은 그 사건을 통해 간수장과 그의 온 가족이 구원을 받았다는 사실입니다. 기도와 찬송이 전도의 문을 연 것입니다.

셋째, 감사할 때 하나님이 개입하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 감사할 때 놀라운 기적을 일으켜 주십니다. 다니엘 6장에 다니엘을 죽이려는 음모가 등장합니다. 왕 외에 어떤 신에게나 사람에게 기도하면 사자 굴에 던져 죽이려는 계획이었습니다. 다니엘은 그 사실을 알고도 감사 기도를 멈추지 않았습니다. “다니엘이 이 조서에 왕의 도장이 찍힌 것을 알고도 ... 전에 하던 대로 하루 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도하며 그의 하나님께 감사하였더라”(단 6:10). 그가 감사 기도를 드릴 때 하나님은 천사를 보내어 사자들의 입을 봉하셨습니다(단 6:22). 절망의 순간이 구원의 순간으로 바뀌었습니다. 감사를 통해 인생 역전을 경험했습니다.

예수님께서도 기적을 행하시기 전에 먼저 감사 기도를 드리셨습니다. 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리로 오천 명을 먹이시는 기적을 행하시기 전에 먼저 감사 기도를 드리셨습니다(요 6:11). 죽은 나사로를 살리시기 전에도 먼저 감사 기도를 드리셨습니다(요 11:41). 그때마다 놀라운 기적이 일어났습니다.

넷째, 순종할 때 하나님이 개입하십니다. 순종은 축복의 비결이며, 하나님의 사랑을 깊이 경험하는 길입니다. 사르밧 과부는 엘리야를 통해 주신 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 마지막 떡 한 조각을 드렸습니다. 그 결과 3년 6개월 동안 통의 가루와 병의 기름이 마르지 않는 은혜를 경험했습니다. 아브라함도 이삭을 번제로 드리라는 하나님의 말씀에 순종했습니다. 그 순간, 하나님의 천사를 만났습니다. 큰 복을 약속받았습니다. “내가 네게 큰 복을 주고 ,,, 또 네 씨로 말미암아 천하 만민이 복을 받으리니 이는 네가 나의 말을 준행하였음이니라 하셨다 하니라”(창 22:17-18). 베드로 역시 예수님의 말씀에 순종해서 깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내렸을 때, 생각지 못한 풍성한 고기를 잡게 되었습니다(눅 5:5-6). 자신이 죄인임을 깨닫는 큰 은혜를 경험했습니다.

새해를 맞이해서 더욱 기도에 힘쓰시기를 바랍니다. 찬양이 우리의 입술에 넘치기를 바랍니다. 범사에 감사하는 거룩한 습관이 삶에 자리 잡기를 바랍니다. 그리고 말씀에 순종함으로 풍성한 복을 누리고, 그 복을 이웃과 나누는 한 해가 되기를 축복합니다.

The Wisdom to Know When God Intervenes

   While preparing a sermon for the New Year, one question came to my mind: “When does God intervene in our lives?” Of course, God can intervene in our lives at any time He chooses. However, as we meditate on Scripture, we discover that there are particular moments when God especially intervenes in our lives.

First, God intervenes when we pray. God responds by sending angels when we pray. We can discover this truth through the prayer of Daniel. “While I was praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. He instructed me and said, ‘Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, and I have come to tell you’” (Daniel 9:21–23). God sent the angel Gabriel at the very moment Daniel began to pray and answered his prayer.

When Jesus also prayed, heaven was opened, the Holy Spirit descended, and the voice of God came. “When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased’” (Luke 3:21–22). In addition, when Jesus prayed earnestly in the Garden of Gethsemane, God sent an angel to strengthen Him. “An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him” (Luke 22:43). When we pray, heaven is opened. God sends His angels and accomplishes amazing works.

Second, God intervenes when we praise Him. Praise has wonderful power. When we praise, we experience the presence of God. “You are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel” (Psalm 22:3). David was a man who deeply understood the power of praise. When he played the harp, King Saul felt relief, and the evil spirit departed from him. “Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him” (1 Samuel 16:23).

King Jehoshaphat also knew the power of praise. When a vast army came against him, he prayed, fixing his eyes on God alone (2 Chronicles 20:12). After God promised victory in the battle, what Jehoshaphat did was to place singers at the front of the army to praise the Lord. When they began to sing praises, God intervened and defeated the enemy. “As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated” (2 Chronicles 20:21–22). Praise is a power that brings victory in battle. When you face difficult circumstances, sing praises. God will intervene.

Paul and Silas also prayed and sang praises to God at midnight in the Philippian prison. Then a great earthquake suddenly shook the prison, the doors were opened, and all the chains were loosened (Acts 16:25–26). What is even more remarkable is that through this event, the jailer and his entire household came to salvation. Prayer and praise opened the door for evangelism.

Third, God intervenes when we give thanks. God performs amazing miracles when we give thanks. In Daniel chapter 6, we see a plot to kill Daniel. Anyone who prayed to any god or person other than the king was to be thrown into the lions’ den. Even after knowing this, Daniel did not stop his prayer of thanksgiving. “When Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home … three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before” (Daniel 6:10). When he offered prayers of thanksgiving, God sent His angel and shut the mouths of the lions (Daniel 6:22). A moment of despair was turned into a moment of salvation. Through thanksgiving, his life was completely reversed.

Jesus also offered prayers of thanksgiving before performing miracles. Before feeding five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish, He first gave thanks (John 6:11). Before raising Lazarus from the dead, He also gave thanks (John 11:41). Each time, amazing miracles took place.

Fourth, God intervenes when we obey. Obedience is the key to blessing and the path to deeply experiencing God’s love. The widow of Zarephath obeyed God’s word spoken through Elijah and offered her last piece of bread. As a result, she experienced the grace that the jar of flour and the jug of oil did not run dry for three and a half years. Abraham also obeyed God’s command to offer Isaac as a burnt offering. At that moment, he encountered the angel of the Lord and received the promise of great blessing. “I will surely bless you … and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me” (Genesis 22:17–18). Peter likewise obeyed Jesus’ word and went out into the deep water and let down his nets. He then caught an unexpectedly large number of fish (Luke 5:5–6) and experienced profound grace as he realized that he was a sinner.

As we welcome the New Year, I encourage you to devote yourselves even more to prayer. May praise overflow from our lips. May the holy habit of giving thanks in all circumstances take root in our lives. And may this be a year in which you enjoy abundant blessings through obedience to God’s Word and share those blessings with others.
