[목회서신] 흔들리는 날에 드리는 기도 | Praying in Times of Wavering

     우리 인생에는 누구에게나 흔들리는 날이 찾아옵니다. 흔들림 없이 사는 사람은 없습니다. 젊을 때도 흔들리지만, 나이가 들수록 더 자주 흔들리는 자신을 발견합니다. 몸이 예전 같지 않아 흔들립니다. 기억력이 흔들립니다. 관계가 흔들립니다. 건강이 흔들립니다. 익숙했던 세상이 낯설어지면서 마음도 흔들립니다. 하지만 흔들리는 것이 꼭 나쁜 것만은 아닙니다. 나무는 바람에 흔들리면서 뿌리를 더 깊이 내립니다. 전혀 흔들리지 않는 나무가 강한 나무가 아닙니다. 깊이 뿌리내린 나무가 강한 나무입니다. 우리 인생도 그렇습니다. 우리는 흔들리면서 하나님께 더 깊이 뿌리를 내립니다.

비행기는 하늘에서 흔들리면서도 목적지를 향해 날아갑니다. 배는 파도에 흔들리면서도 대양을 항해합니다. 흔들림이 곧 실패는 아닙니다. 흔들림이 곧 길을 잃었다는 뜻도 아닙니다. 흔들리지만 방향을 잃지 않으면 됩니다. 흔들리지만 하나님을 붙들면 됩니다. 흔들림에는 두 얼굴이 있습니다. 부정적인 흔들림은 우리를 불안하게 만들고, 두렵게 만들고, 낙심하게 만듭니다. 믿음까지 흔들리게 합니다. 반면에 긍정적인 흔들림은 우리를 깨웁니다. 교만을 내려놓게 합니다. 하나님 없이 살 수 없다는 사실을 배우게 합니다. 흔들림은 우리를 겸손하게 만들고, 기도의 자리로 인도합니다.

거센 바람이 불 때 딱딱한 나무는 부러집니다. 그러나 유연한 나무는 흔들리지만 부러지지 않습니다. 인생도 그렇습니다. 흔들릴 줄 아는 사람은 유연한 사람입니다. 유연한 사람은 환경을 부정하지 않습니다. 현실을 인정합니다. 그리고 그 현실 속에서 하나님께 뿌리를 내립니다. 다윗은 흔들리는 날을 많이 경험한 사람입니다. 그는 사울 왕에게 쫓겼습니다. 아들 압살롬에게 배신당했습니다. 죄책감 속에서 울었습니다. 외로움 속에서 밤을 지새웠습니다. 그러나 다윗의 위대함은 흔들리지 않은 데 있지 않습니다. 흔들릴 때 하나님께 기도드린 데 있습니다.

다윗은 이렇게 기도했습니다. “내 마음이 약해질 때에 땅 끝에서부터 주께 부르짖으오리니 나보다 높은 바위에 나를 인도하소서”(시 61:2). 이 말씀은 흔들리는 사람의 기도입니다. 마음이 약해질 때 드리는 기도입니다. 자신보다 높은 바위, 곧 하나님께로 인도해 달라는 기도입니다. 또 다윗은 고백합니다. “나의 영혼이 잠잠히 하나님만 바람이여 나의 구원이 그에게서 나오는도다”(시 62:1). 흔들리는 상황 속에서도 영혼이 잠잠할 수 있는 길은 하나님만 바라보는 것입니다. 바깥은 흔들려도 속사람은 하나님 안에서 고요할 수 있습니다.

나이가 든 어른들 중에는 흔들리면서도 고요함을 가꾸는 분들이 있습니다. 그분들에게 고통이 없는 것은 아닙니다. 상처가 없는 것도 아닙니다. 오히려 많은 풍랑을 지나온 분들입니다. 그런데도 그분들 안에는 깊은 고요함이 있습니다. 그 고요함은 체념이 아닙니다. 믿음입니다. 포기가 아닙니다. 하나님께 맡김입니다. 기도는 맡김입니다. 흔들리는 날의 기도는 내 힘으로 모든 것을 통제하려는 손을 내려놓고, 하나님의 손에 붙들리는 은혜입니다. 기도는 문제를 부정하는 시간이 아닙니다. 문제보다 크신 하나님을 바라보는 시간입니다. 흔들리는 날에 가장 위험한 것은 흔들림 자체가 아닙니다. 기도를 잃어버리는 것입니다. 기도를 잃으면 흔들림은 두려움이 됩니다. 그러나 기도하면 흔들림은 하나님께 더 가까이 나아가는 통로가 됩니다.

하나님은 흔들리는 날에 드리는 기도에 어떻게 응답하실까요? 때로 하나님은 풍랑을 잠잠케 하십니다. 예수님은 바람과 바다를 꾸짖으시며 “잠잠하라 고요하라”고 말씀하셨습니다(막 4:39). 그러나 때로 하나님은 풍랑보다 먼저 우리 마음을 잠잠케 하십니다. 환경이 즉시 변하지 않아도, 우리 안에 하나님의 평강을 주십니다. 하나님은 흔들리는 우리를 책망만 하지 않으십니다. 붙들어 주십니다. “네 짐을 여호와께 맡기라 그가 너를 붙드시고 의인의 요동함을 영원히 허락하지 아니하시리로다”(시 55:22). 하나님은 흔들리는 우리를 버리지 않으십니다. 흔들리는 중에도 붙들어 주십니다. 넘어지지 않도록 은혜의 손으로 지켜 주십니다.

그러므로 흔들리는 날에 낙심하지 마십시오. 흔들리는 날은 뿌리를 내리는 날입니다. 흔들리는 날은 기도하는 날입니다. 흔들리는 날은 하나님을 더 깊이 만나는 날입니다. 흔들림은 끝이 아닙니다. 흔들림은 더 깊은 믿음으로 들어가는 문입니다.

주님, 오늘 제 마음이 흔들립니다. 그러나 흔들리는 제 마음을 주님께 드립니다. 저를 나보다 높은 바위 위에 세워 주옵소서. 흔들리는 세상 속에서 흔들리지 않는 하나님을 바라보게 하옵소서. 흔들림 속에서도 뿌리 깊은 나무처럼, 풍랑 속에서도 목적지를 향해 가는 배처럼, 주님 안에서 끝까지 믿음의 길을 걷게 하옵소서. 아멘.

Praying in Times of Wavering

   There are days in every life when we are shaken. No one goes through life without experiencing them. We are shaken in our youth, but as we grow older, we often discover that such moments come even more frequently. Our bodies are no longer what they once were. Our memory begins to falter. Relationships become fragile. Our health becomes uncertain. As the familiar world slowly changes, our hearts are shaken as well. Yet being shaken is not always a bad thing. A tree grows deeper roots as it sways in the wind. The strongest tree is not the one that never moves, but the one whose roots reach deep into the earth. So it is with our lives. We grow deeper roots in God precisely through the seasons when we are shaken.

An airplane reaches its destination even while passing through turbulence. A ship crosses the ocean while being tossed by the waves. Being shaken is not the same as failing. Nor does it mean we have lost our way. We may be shaken, as long as we do not lose our direction. We may be shaken, as long as we continue to hold on to God. Yet, there are two kinds of shaking. Negative shaking fills us with anxiety, fear, and discouragement. It can even shake our faith. But positive shaking awakens us. It strips away our pride and teaches us that we cannot live apart from God. It humbles us and draws us into a deeper life of prayer.

When fierce winds blow, a rigid tree snaps. But a flexible tree bends without breaking. Life is much the same. Those who know how to bend are people of resilience. They do not deny reality; they accept it. And in the midst of that reality, they sink their roots into God. David experienced many days of wavering. He fled from King Saul. He was betrayed by his son Absalom. He wept under the weight of guilt and spent long nights in loneliness. Yet David's greatness was not that he was never shaken. His greatness was that whenever he was shaken, he turned to God in prayer.

David prayed, "From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (Psalm 61:2). This is the prayer of a shaken heart. It is the prayer we offer when our strength is gone. It is the cry to be led to the Rock that is higher than ourselves—to God. David also declared, "My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him" (Psalm 62:1). Even in the midst of life's instability, the soul can remain still by fixing its eyes on God alone. Though everything around us may be shaken, our inner being can remain quiet in His presence.

Among older believers, there are those who have learned to cultivate a deep stillness even while life continues to shake them. It is not because they have escaped suffering. Nor is it because they have never been wounded. On the contrary, they have weathered many storms. Yet within them there is a profound peace. That peace is not resignation—it is faith. It is not giving up—it is entrusting everything to God. Prayer is an act of surrender. The prayer we offer on shaken days is the grace of releasing our desperate attempts to control everything and allowing ourselves to be held by God's hand. Prayer is not denying our problems; it is fixing our eyes on the God who is greater than our problems. The greatest danger on the days we are shaken is not the shaking itself—it is losing our prayer life. When we lose prayer, our shaking turns into fear. But when we pray, our shaking becomes a pathway that draws us closer to God.

How does God answer the prayers we offer on shaken days? Sometimes He calms the storm. Jesus rebuked the wind and the waves and said, "Quiet! Be still!" (Mark 4:39). At other times, before calming the storm around us, God first calms the storm within us. Even when our circumstances do not immediately change, He fills our hearts with His peace. God does not merely rebuke us when we are shaken—He upholds us."Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall" (Psalm 55:22). God never abandons us in our trembling. Even while we are shaken, He holds us securely. With His gracious hand, He keeps us from falling.

Therefore, do not lose heart on the days when you are shaken. They are the days when your roots grow deeper. They are the days when you learn to pray. They are the days when you come to know God more intimately. Being shaken is not the end. It is the doorway into a deeper faith.

Lord, today my heart is shaken. Yet I place my trembling heart into Your hands. Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. In this shaking world, help me to fix my eyes on You, the unshakable God. Like a deeply rooted tree that stands through the wind, and like a ship that continues toward its destination through the storm, may I walk faithfully with You until the very end. Amen.
