Hope Is the Faith That Looks Toward the Light in the Darkness

Hope Is the Faith That Looks Toward the Light in the Darkness
Hope is the willingness to face the darkness honestly while waiting for the light. When we cannot see what lies ahead, we become afraid. Familiar paths begin to feel unfamiliar, and even God may seem far away. Yet the darkness before our eyes is not the whole story of our lives. Even in places we cannot see, God is holding us in His hands.
Each of us carries pain that we cannot easily put into words. Some are waiting for medical test results. Others are facing the empty space left by someone they love. Some smile as they meet people during the day, only to swallow their tears alone at night. Though our suffering takes different forms, we all need comfort. We need a small measure of hope to endure today and take another step toward tomorrow.
Look up at the night sky. Stars that remain unseen in the daylight begin to shine in the darkness. The night does not create the stars. It simply allows us to see the light that was already there. The same is true of God's love. Through the dark nights of suffering, we discover anew the love that was with us long before our trials began. To someone who has endured a long night, even a single ray of light entering through the window becomes a dazzling gift.
Genesis tells us that when darkness was over the surface of the deep, "the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" (Genesis 1:2). Before anything was brought into order, the Holy Spirit was already there. As I meditate on this passage, I see the tender hand of God embracing and caring for fragile life. Then God spoke: "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3). Light came through the Word of God. Even when our hearts are troubled and the order of our lives seems to have fallen apart, we can still come before God. We do not need to put our hearts in order before we pray. Even today, the Holy Spirit does not turn away from our confusion. Through His Word, He opens a new way before us.
We marvel at the beauty of flowers, yet we often forget the time their seeds spent buried in the soil. Even when everything above the ground is still, roots are growing beneath the surface. Life also grows quietly and mysteriously in a mother's womb. Just because we cannot see something does not mean that nothing is happening. Even during the hidden seasons of our lives, God is deepening the roots of our faith and preparing us for what lies ahead.
Jacob encountered God on the night he left home and lay down with a stone for his pillow. When he awoke, he confessed, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it" (Genesis 28:16). He was still lying beside the same stone pillow, but now he knew that God was there. God had opened the eyes of his heart to recognize the Lord who was with him even in the darkness.
Above all, our hope is rooted in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When our Lord was crucified, darkness came over the whole land. Yet it was there that God's love for the salvation of sinners was revealed. Even the stone sealing the tomb could not contain the life of God. Because our Lord has risen, we believe that death and despair are not the end.
To embrace the darkness means not despising ourselves for going through such a season. It means bringing our pain into the loving arms of God rather than hiding it. When you need to cry, allow yourself to weep. When you need help, reach out your hand. On days when you cannot even find the words to pray, a simple prayer is enough: "Lord, please hold me." Sometimes our tears become our prayers. The Lord understands even the pain we cannot fully express in words.
Those who have experienced darkness can learn to be grateful for even the smallest light. Those who have known loneliness understand how precious a warm gesture of kindness can be. Those who have passed through nights of tears are less likely to judge the tears of others. Suffering does not automatically make everyone mature. Yet those who learn to rely on God and grow in love through suffering can develop hearts that are deeper and more compassionate than before.
There is a grace we come to understand only when we are broken. True understanding opens our hearts. Hearts that were once closed begin to open, and grace that was once hidden becomes visible. Understanding also brings things together. It connects the seasons we have lived through with the purposes of God. The scattered pieces of our lives begin to take on new meaning in His hands.
A heart that has received the Lord's comfort also makes room for the tears of others. Even when we cannot explain the reasons for someone's suffering, we can sit beside them and weep with them. A warm meal or a simple phone call asking how someone is doing can give them strength to endure a long night. In these small ways, we can become instruments of God's comfort to one another. Even in seasons of suffering, love continues to grow.
The psalmist declares, "The day is yours, and yours also the night" (Psalm 74:16). The nights of our lives are also in God's hands. Even when the waiting seems long, the Lord's love for us never grows weary. Give thanks for each small grace, and warmly hold the hand of someone beside you. Even if you cannot yet see the entire path ahead, you can still take one step with the Lord. Hope is the faith that looks toward the light in the darkness. And the Lord, who is that Light, is with us today.
